Farmer Workshops

Sierra Leone

In 2017 Farm & Culture started to support sustainable smallholder farming in Sierra Leone. Farmer Workshops about organic farming, social and economical aspects of agricultural production have been organized focussing on farmer cooperatives.

The role of agriculture is very important in the Sierra Leonean society. Especially smallholder farming is the basis of food production in the country. Traditional farming methods are often closely related to integrated farming systems. Because of the increasing import of agricultural products and decreasing numbers of young people who like to work as farmers, the situation of smallholder farmers becomes more and more difficult. But still many people identify with agriculture. Family and group farming can often be found in rural areas. At the same time the farmers needs are various. Especially gaining knowledge about sustainable farming as well as technical support can be named as basic needs. The Farmer Workshops were adressing those needs to increase the farmers know how and to enable them to share their knowledge with others.

In 2018 it was time for technical support. With the help of Lions Club Dithmarschen and Soroptimist Internation Dithm were building a dryfloor and renovated a storage for a group of female smallholder farmers. Rice is an important part of the Sierra Leonean diet and the hygenic drying process and storage rises the food quality.

After the exchange of knowledge, it was time for some technical support in 2018. With the help of the Lions Club Dithmarschen and Soroptimist International Dithmarschen, a drying area for rice was built for a group of small farmers and a warehouse for harvesting products was renovated. Rice is an important food in Sierra Leone and hygienic drying and storage have a positive effect on the quality of the daily diet.

Many thanks to BINGO! -sponsorship Schleswig-Holstein for the comprehensive support.
